Suzaku's lips lingered on his for a while longer, before the younger Knight pulled away, only to place his head against Gino's chest. They stood there surrounded by the suffocating silence, neither speaking nor willing to move, the all to distant rumble of impatient guests, didn't not penetrate the silence that had engulfed the two knights.
"I love you too ... Gino" came the barely audible whisper, form the trembling young man in his arms, the sound of which was like a happy firecracker on a lazy summer evening, and in that moment it was just the two of them. Somewhere out there someone had heard his fervent plea, and granted him his hearts most desperate desire. It was however, to be only a fleeting moment of joy. "But I cannot run away with you"
He never knew that seven simple words would ever shatter his heart so fully and completely as those the Knight of seven had just uttered. Suzaku meanwhile had stepped back, away form him, those once bright emerald orbs of his reflecting all the pain and hurt Gino himself was feeling.
"But Suzaku ..."
"This is the only way"
"Only way?" Gino could feel his temper rising again, although his words sounded more desperate now, "Any country that demands something like this of you, be it atonement or whatever the hell else, does not deserve you!"
"I can't ... live ... if I don't do this" came Suzaku's reply, it sounded so miserable that Gino could swear that what ever was left of his heart was broken by those words, and the ones that followed. "Because ... I won't let myself"
"So I can't love you ... even though I do"
Every argument he had been formulating in his head, died at the back of his throat, he was speechless at the despair, that emitted form the one he loved. The idea of picking Suzaku up and carrying him away to some far of place, only for the two of them, also lost its appeal, at the thought of Suzaku spending his days ridden with guilt that he had the chance to save his beloved Japan and he walked away form it. And Gino would never be able to live with himself if he caused this. It has been said that if you truly love someone you'll let them go. But he could never in a million years acknowledge this, so instead he chose silence.
"I'm ... sorry ... Gino"
The silence was deafening.
"Gino ... please say something?"
And now he asks for my blessings? God whoever he is has a twisted sense of humor
"Do what you must" he says finally, "I cannot however stand by and watch you do this" he adds approaching Suzaku and taking him by the shoulders, hence forcing him to meet his gaze, "I will however never give up on you as long as I live"
And with that Gino walked out the back door of the room and out of the church, he may have lost this battle but the war was far form over, and he would be triumphant in the end, or he was not Gino Weinberg!
